The Black Sustainability Network is a vibrant community of over 2,300 members from around the world who are committed to environmental justice and sustainability. This essential network empowers individuals and organizations to create meaningful connections and drive positive change. The interactive map enhances communication among members and serves as a valuable platform for sharing resources, encouraging collaboration, and developing innovative solutions to urgent environmental issues faced by communities globally.
The Problem
The interactive map’s load times stretched to an unbearable 2–3 minutes, causing frustration and leading users to abandon the platform before engaging. This delay resulted in missed opportunities for meaningful connections and collaboration, undermining the network’s mission.
With users unwilling to wait, the platform’s potential to facilitate global engagement was severely compromised. The prolonged load times not only hindered user experience but also threatened the very essence of the network’s mission to connect and empower its community.
Enhancing Platform Performance
What We Did
To address the critical performance issues, we initiated a comprehensive overhaul of the platform’s infrastructure. The first step involved transitioning from GoDaddy to Render, a move that provided significantly faster hosting capabilities. Recognizing the need for efficient data management, we integrated Redis caching, which effectively minimized redundant data retrieval processes.
Furthermore, we meticulously reconstructed the map loader. This included calculating the total number of available records and transparently communicating this information to users. By implementing a strategy to load 100 records at a time, we dramatically reduced load times, ensuring a seamless and responsive user experience.
These strategic enhancements not only optimized the platform’s speed but also reinforced its reliability, allowing the nonprofit to better serve its community and fulfill its mission.
The Outcome
The transformative changes implemented have yielded remarkable results. The map, once a source of frustration, now loads in mere seconds, a stark contrast to its previous 2–3 minute delay. This improvement has led to a significant increase in user engagement, as visitors are no longer deterred by long wait times. With a more responsive platform, users are more inclined to explore, interact, and connect, fostering a vibrant community atmosphere.
These enhancements have not only improved user satisfaction but have also empowered the organization to achieve its mission more effectively. The platform’s newfound efficiency supports ongoing engagement and collaboration, crucial elements for the nonprofit’s success.
